Textbook preview going on now

LISD is holding a preview for new elementary math textbooks under consideration for the 2008-09 school year and encourages parent and community perspectives as part of the adoption process. The books are available for viewing from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. until Jan. 11 at the Lina Milliken Education Center, 2103 Savage Lane in Lewisville. A form will be available for participants to provide feedback. Considerable effort goes into selecting textbooks for LISD. One teacher from each elementary campus serves on the the textbook adoption committee. The group conducts an in-depth study to determine the best textbook for students' needs. These elementary math books will be used until the next state adoption, which will most likely occur in 7 - 8 years.

Dates changed for annual MLK contest The Denton Area Alliance of Black School Educators will host its annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Essay Contest on Jan. 26 from 9 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. at Fred Moore High School, 815 Crosstimbers in Denton. Information previously released said the contest would be held on Jan. 12. All Denton County middle and high school students who attend both the morning and afternoon sessions will be eligible to submit essays. LISD students to participate in annual MLK day celebration Numerous LISD students and organizations will be participating in the annual Dr. King commemoration celebration at 7 p.m. on Jan. 19 at the Trietsch Memorial United Methodist Church in Flower Mound. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Jerry Roy will be speaking at the event along with other community officials and the winners of the Dr. King Art and Essay Contests will be announced.
