    Don't forget! LISD's winter break is Dec. 24 - Jan. 2.

    Students will be dismissed early on Friday, Dec. 21. Elementary students will be dismissed at 1:30 p.m. and middle school students will be dismissed at 12:30 p.m. High school students will be released at noon.

    LISD updating emergency student information

    LISD is implementing a new students software system and LISD employees are in the process of confirming parent and emergency contact phone numbers for students.

    LISD will be contacting parents and sending letters home asking parents to approve their current contact information in the near future.

    LEF scholarship applications available
    .
    Applications for the 2008 LISD Education Foundation (LEF) scholarships are now available online at www.lisdef.com. More than 140 scholarships are available to LISD graduating seniors.

    Each scholarship has its own eligibility requirements including leadership, academic or athletic ability. Students are encouraged to apply early. Applications are due Jan. 28.

    LISD bowls for scholars

    The annual LISD Bowling for Scholars Tournament will be held Jan. 26 at AMF Lanes in Lewisville.

    Proceeds from the tournament are used for scholarships, teacher grants and PTA programs. Each year the LISD Council of PTAs awards two $500 scholarships to graduating seniors at each LISD high school.

    Registrants can sign up for one of three bowling times; 9 - 11 a.m., 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. or 2 - 4 p.m. The cost to participate is $25 per adult and $20 per youth, which includes a T - shirt. Trophies are awarded to the top teams, as well as prizes for the school with the most teams. There are also door prizes and a prize for the best team name.

    Teams of four can register with Traci Owens at 972-874-7191 or by e-mail at bowling4scholars@lisdpta.net. Registration forms can be found online at www.lisdpta.org.

    LISD students invited to participate in essay contest

    The Denton Area Alliance of Black School Educators will host its annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Essay Contest on Jan. 12 from 9 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. at Fred Moore High School, 815 Crosstimbers in Denton.

    All Denton County middle and high school students who attend both the morning and afternoon sessions will be eligible to submit essays. Registration is due Jan. 11 at 3 p.m. To register, go to www.dentonisd.org/mlk or to www.dentonisd.org/mlkessaycontest.

    Hebron gives and receives
    Hebron High School Cheerleaders led a team to participate in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure on Oct. 20 and raised the most money of any school, college or university this year.

    The team, called Big Blue Goes Pink, raised more than $3,500 and beat 74 other teams competing in the same category for most money raised.
