Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is One World Café?

A: One World Café is our breakfast and lunch concept for elementary and secondary schools. The One World Café offers students a variety of entrée choices, friendly eating atmosphere and eye-catching graphics and colors.

Q:What is LISD's policy for charging in the cafeteria

A: Charging is limited. If charging is not available the student is giving an alternative meal. Lewisville ISD Food Service will provide a peanut butter sandwich or cheese sandwich (alternate if allergic to peanuts) and milk at no charge. A cheese sandwich is a good alternative if a student is allergic to peanuts. The meal is rung into the POS as an alternative meal. Secondary schools do not allow charging. Elementary schools are allowed to charge two breakfasts and two lunches (up to $5.90 for a full paid student, $1.40 for a reduced student), before being given an alternative meal. LISD does investigate suspected abuse. Adults are not allowed to charge.

Q: Can I pay for meals online?

A: YES! You may view your child's balance and add money online at http://lewisville.revtrak.net. For questions regarding this program click here.

Q: Why do teachers, adults and visitors pay higher meal prices?

A: Student meals are subsidized by USDA commodities and state reimbursements. The state does not allow Teacher/Adult/Visitor meals to receive such reimbursements; therefore, the price is slightly higher.

Q: Can a student pay for meal in advance by check? Who should a student give payment to?

A: Yes. Please make checks payable to LISD Child Nutrition and have your student deliver the check to the One World Café Manager or Cashier at their school.

Q: Chocolate milk is bad for kids and causes hyperactivity, right?

A: No, chocolate milk provides essential nutrients, calcium, protein, Vitamin D, Vitamin A, potassium and Vitamin B12. Studies show that chocolate milk does not cause hyperactivity. Studies also show that chocolate milk helps children develop strong bones and teeth. Chocolate milk provides 300 mg. of calcium, 1/3 of what the daily requirement is for children. There are 60 more calories in chocolate milk than in white, and children need calories for energy.

Q: What is a commodity food and why do we use it?

A: Commodity food is food that is made available to LISD through the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). The amount of food that a school district receives is based on the number of student lunches served. The type of food offered is based upon the extra commodity food available throughout the country.

Q: Why can't parents bring in outside food for parties and fundraiser's?

A:  The Texas Department of Agriculture has created a new set of guidelines for Texas public schools that participate in the National School Lunch Program.  In an effort to fight childhood obesity, these rules restrict parents, student groups, faculty and administration from selling or providing restricted items during meal times.  For Elementary schools the restriction is extended throughout the entire school day.  For more information about the TDA Regulations effective August 2004 visit The Texas Department of Agriculture website. (http://www.agr.state.tx.us/)

Q: Why can't students be served certain types of candy and snacks at school?

A: The Texas Department of Agriculture created a policy for Texas public schools participating in the National School Lunch Program.  In an effort to fight childhood obesity, the Foods of Minimal Nutritional Value Policy restricts such foods as soda, water ices, chewing gum, and certain candies from being served or provided on the school campus until after the last lunch period.  Elementary campuses are restricted from serving these items throughout the entire school day.  For more information about The Foods of Minimal Nutritional Value Policy visit The Texas Department of Agriculture website. (http://www.agr.state.tx.us/foodnutrition/policy/ntn_restricted_foods.htm)

Q: How do I know if my students are eligible to participate in the Free and Reduced Meal Program?

A: To apply for eligibility simply pick up an application in the main office of your student's school or visit the LISD Special Services Building at 400 W. Main Street in Lewisville to complete the application.  Applications are available in English and Spanish.  For further questions call the CN Office at (469) 713-5207.
